Gary Broadhurst - Mohawk Valley Community College (NY) | NJCAA Board of Regents, NJCAA Foundation Board
The 2020 recipient of the NJCAA Loyalty Award, Gary Broadhurst has been involved with the Mohawk Valley Community College athletic department for more than four decades.
Currently, Broadhurst holds the title of Dean of Athletics & Physical Education and has served as the head of the athletics department since 1996. In that span, teams under Broadhurst's guidance have won 20 NJCAA championships and have had more than 450 student-athletes earn All-American status across the department's breadth of sports.
"[Gary] is such a good example of what loyalty actually means," said Mohawk Valley head men's basketball coach Matt St. Croix, whose team just played for the men's DIII national championship in Rochester, MN earlier in March. "For over 40 years, he's been loyal and dedicated to Mohawk Valley, loyal to the Hawk athletic program and our student-athletes, and loyal to the mission of what the NJCAA stands for."
Broadhurst has served in a number of organizations and committees, both internal and external of the NJCAA. Currently, Broadhurst serves as chair for the NJCAA DIII Men's Soccer Sport Committee in addition to his service as the NJCAA Board of Regent member, representing Region III. Additionally, Broadhurst currently serves on several committees within the SUNY (State University of New York) system and is also a Past President of the National Alliance of Two Year College Athletic Administrators and currently serves as the organization's treasurer. More recently, Broadhurst became a board member of the newly-formed NJCAA Foundation – dedicated to enhancing the NJCAA national organization, student-athletes, member colleges, and local communities through financial support, scholarships, program initiatives, and community service
Broadhurst has hosted and served as tournament director for multiple NJCAA championship events, most recently the 2019 DIII Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
"Gary is committed to student-athlete success both in the classroom and on the pitch," said Mohawk Valley head women's soccer coach Jim Vitale. "He provides support for his coaches and creates a culture of equity for all student-athletes."
Having been bestowed numerous awards before, Broadhurst was presented with NATYCAA's L. William Miller Award in 2016, the criteria for which is very similar to the NJCAA Loyalty Award. Broadhurst is also a four-time winner of NACDA's Athletic Director of the Year honor, winning it in 2007, 2012, 2016, and 2019.
